A person is not just a collection of organs. Seems like a
pretty obvious statement, but one that can sometimes be
forgotten. A good internist, however, is always looking at
the whole person. It has become popular these days to call
this "holistic" medicine, but for me, it's just practicing really
good medicine. The other part of being an excellent physician is
to make sure that I offer my patients the latest in evidence-based
therapies. I don't believe in a distinction between "alternative"
medicine and "Western" medicine. The true distinction is
practicing evidence-based medicine (for which there have been
published randomized-controlled clinical trials) vs. anecdotal
medicine (for which there have been poorly designed trials or
none at all). I take the latest evidence and discuss it with my
patient so we can come up with a plan to better his or her health,
together.
